  1. 01It has no front

55 × 63 × 38 cm, built to be walked around. The crown closes from every angle, so there is no side to hide against a wall.

  2. 02One wire, root to leaf

Nothing welded, cast or glued. The strands that end as leaves at the tips are the same strands braided into the trunk.

  3. 03An object, not an appointment

No water, no dormancy, no decline. The condition report of 2075 is the one written today.

Detail

Open whatever you want to know.

Aluminium wire at 1 mm, stainless steel, and a pot made for this piece. Over 1,500 metres of wire, worked into one continuous structure. Nothing in the tree was bought finished, and nothing in it was cut.

Wire goes in as a bundle and comes out as a tree. Every branch tip is already there in that first bundle — which means the whole shape is committed before the first bend, and cannot be corrected later. That constraint is why there will not be a second one.

The bare armature

First — the armature. Every wire that will end as a branch tip is already in this bundle.

The silver skeleton

Second — the skeleton. Splitting and twisting down to the finest twigs. The silhouette is finished before a single leaf exists.

Hands setting leaf clusters

Third — the canopy. Over 450 clusters, one at a time, until the crown closes. This is where most of the 315 hours went.

A living bonsai of this stature is a standing appointment. Water, prune, repot, read the seasons — and one forgotten fortnight in July can end forty years of it. That fragility is the whole point of the form, and it is also why most people admire one and never keep one.

This one asks for a dry room and the occasional dusting. That is the entire contract. There is a practical side to it as well: a living tree of this class is a customs problem — plant health paperwork, quarantine, seasonal risk, sometimes no legal route at all. This one is metal, so it simply travels as art.

Plates I–VII

Shot at working distance, unretouched.

No compositing and no added highlights. What the lens saw at 1 mm is what is on the page.

Detail of the red wire leaf clusters
I · Canopy

Every cluster is looped closed by hand, then set onto a branch tip.

The silver branch structure
II · Structure

The frame carries the whole canopy without one weld, screw or drop of glue.

The trunk entering the pot
III · Trunk

One braid, thousands of strands thick where it enters the pot.

IV · The whole work

Seen from the side, where the crown steps out furthest.

Macro of the red wire loops
V · Leaf

Close enough to count the loops. There are over four hundred and fifty clusters of them.

Detail of a braided branch
VI · Branch

Split off the trunk itself. The branch is not attached to the tree — it is the tree.

Roth Objects of permanence

Three hundred and fifteen hours were spent so that no more ever have to be. In fifty years it will be exactly what it is now, in whatever room you put it in.

The register

Three things have to agree.

Every work is numbered before it leaves the studio. That number is stamped into the base, printed on the certificate, repeated on the seal and held on the register — so a piece can be checked without asking the artist to vouch for it.

01

The document and the base carry the same number.

02

The hologram repeats it.

03

The register confirms it.
